The Germanna Educational Foundation Kent D. Farmer, president and CEO of the Rappahannock Electric Cooperative, Distinguished Philanthropist of the Year.

During a dinner honoring Farmer, Fredericksburg area leaders praised him for his generosity. The way Farmer lives his life brings to mind a Jackie Robinson quote, said
Lynne Richardson, dean of the school of business at the University of Mary Washington. The quote: “A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives.”

“His philanthropy and leadership have made a lasting impact on the Germanna community, and they have helped many Germanna students achieve their educational goals,” said GCC Educational Foundation Executive Director Doug Elliott.

Farmer’s son Kyle used another quote to describe what has driven his father to become a philanthropic leader in the community. This quote is from Desmond Tutu, “My humanity is bound up in yours.”

“My father believes everybody, once in a while, needs to catch a break,” Kyle Farmer said. “What really gets him going is giving someone a break that allows them to reach their full potential. He derives pure pleasure from helping others. He just likes to do it. It makes him happy.”

Farmer, who lives in Caroline County, serves as chair of the Fredericksburg Regional Alliance, as a member of the Virginia Chamber of Commerce Board and as a member of of the UMW School of Business Board. He has also provided leadership for the Rappahannock United Way, among other organizations.
