VDOT getting ready for Route 3 west project at Lick Run

by | Jun 24, 2024 | Spotsylvania, Ted Schubel, Traffic

VDOT today will begin mobilizing with temporary single lane closures for a culvert installation project on Route 3 westbound over Lick Run in Spotsylvania.

Due to the condition of the existing bridge over Lick Run, which was built in 1932, the bridge will be replaced with a 36-foot-long, 12-foot-wide, and 8-foot-high concrete box culvert. Replacing the bridge will allow vehicles of all legal weights to travel along Route 3 at this crossing.

The project will be built in two construction phases. The first phase will be underway through early September 2024, and will require only temporary single lane closures and the closure of two median crossovers immediately east and west of Lick Run in early July.

During the project’s second phase, a temporary 4-day reduction in travel lanes will be required.

Crews will close two median crossovers to build a temporary traffic pattern that will be in place during the project’s second phase. View map of crossover closures here: https://bit.ly/45ATVAH

During phase two, crews will install the culvert during an extended weekend operation. This installation is scheduled to occur from 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13 through noon, Monday, Sept. 16, 2024. The following backup dates will be used if the planned weekend is cancelled for inclement weather:

9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, 2024 through noon Monday, Sept. 23, 2024
9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, 2024 through noon Monday, Sept. 30, 2024

During the weekend installation, Route 3 westbound will be closed at Lick Run. Westbound traffic will be shifted to travel in the Route 3 eastbound lanes, with one lane of travel open in each direction.

Closing Route 3 westbound will allow crews to rapidly install the new concrete culvert box in one extended operation.
The Route 3 westbound closure will start just prior to the crossover in front of the Spotsylvania County Museum and end past the crossover in front of the Spotsylvania County Fire Station 5. Single lane closures will extend past the crossovers in both directions to get the eastbound lanes down to one lane each way.

While Route 3 eastbound and westbound will remain open during the Sept. 13-16, travelers will be encouraged to use alternate routes to avoid delay.

Message boards will be posted ahead of the closure to notify motorists.
